The summer has flown by and school is back in session. I’ve thought about what it would be like to go back through those school days. Would I do things differently? Would I have had the same friends? Would my life be different?
Throughout the years, I have had the chance to see friends and acquaintances from my school days at reunions and chance encounters. At those times, looking into their faces, I see the eyes of the past. For a brief moment, I even feel younger.
I met with an old high school friend the other day. We were acquaintances in school but never really “hung out”. We chatted for over an hour like we had known each other for years. I was sorry that we hadn’t really connected back then but was grateful for the chance to visit now.
Some good friends remain good friends. They “have my back,” so to speak. We call one another when we need a listening ear, some honest advice or just talk. We pick up where we left off, whether it was just yesterday or months or even years since we last visited.
School was the place our connection began. As this new school year begins, reflect on the friendships you made and the lessons you learned. We can’t go back and relive our past, but we can choose to make a difference with the future. God has blessed me with friends, both new and old. Friendship isn’t about whom you have known the longest… It’s about who has your back and chooses to stay by your side.
