Today, my high school sweetheart, Dan and I celebrate our 38 year anniversary. We are not the same persons that we were all those years ago. Life has changed and so have we. The Lord has blessed us with wonderfully talented, smart, caring children who married persons with those same attributes; now our grandchildren are exhibiting similar traits. We’ve experienced the best of times… and definitely, the worst of times. But we’ve done it together.
People have asked us, “What is your secret?” It’s no secret, really. A happy marriage should have God at the center. People change, everything changes – only God will never change. It is very difficult to be in a good relationship without God at the heart and in your hearts. Dan and I pray for strength and guidance each day.
A wedding anniversary is the celebration of love, trust, partnership, tolerance and most of all, friendship. While all the cards, flowers, music, the bells and whistles – things that make us feel romantic – are wonderful, they’re not what really matters. It is prayer, loving and sharing that connect us. Dan and I are friends… really, very good friends.
I once read that Bill Cosby said, “The heart of marriage is memories; and if the two of you happen to have the same ones and can savor your reruns, then your marriage is a gift from the gods.” Dan and I have been blessed… we watch a lot of reruns.
